Funny stories and belly laughs

My husband is one of the funniest people I have ever known. You wouldn’t describe him as ‘a funny guy’ if you met him – he’s not a typical extroverted joke teller – but his specialty is dropping one liners into a conversation in the most unassuming manner. I once asked him what happened to a certain cardboard furniture company that we wanted to get a funky couch from for the office and he told me they folded…with a deadpan expression (to this day that still cracks me up).

He also has a wonderful ability to sketch hilarious imaginative stories.

One of his ‘infamous’ stories is the one of the brain cockroach…

I can’t even remember how he got onto the topic a few years ago but the brain cockroach was his way of explaining how you can sometimes stop mid-sentence and completely forget what you’ve been saying. He went on to say that everyone has a cockroach in their brains, floating around on a wine cork that connects up the wires from one side of the brain to the other, ensuring the smooth functioning of this rather useful organ. But sometimes the roach falls off the cork and the connections don’t get made, giving the person a blank stare and short term memory loss. (Important to note here that this was a completely sober revelation…)

He’s told the story a million times and I still find it funny. In my mind I picture a hollow cavern filled half way with brain juice – a clear pleasant liquid. Then there’s the weathered cork and the cockroach balancing on top of it. The roach himself looks more like a character from the Simpsons/Futurama crossed with the ‘prawns’ from District 9 – bulgy out eyes and many many lateral legs scuttling from one side to another picking up pink tubes connected to the inside of the cavity and connecting them – each time with a spark. He wears a yellow life vest so he never drowns.

Lately I’ve been having real cockroach connectivity problems and this delightful analogy has made me chuckle through it.

After all, laughter truly is the best medicine…

Wishing you all a funny weekend… of the funny haha variety not ‘funny weird’ mind…
